Choose your setup

Pick an edition and a safe starting point before changing a vault.

Goal

Choose the correct installation path for your operating system, package and existing vault.

Before you start

Keep existing work backed up. Use a separate learning vault for your first test. You need a local editor or Obsidian; an AI agent is required for the AI-assisted exercises but not for creating files.

Choose an edition

Setup Choose this when Supported entry point
Community via Starter Kit 1.2.0 You want the Apache-2.0 starter and an inspectable file workflow Community install
Pro 1.1.0 You have the Pro package and want its guided Windows installer and governed project context Pro install
Existing plain Obsidian vault You want to add KOS without treating the folder as a new empty vault Existing vault
Existing KOS vault You need to preserve the current installer identity and review upgrade conflicts Upgrade

Community and Pro are different distributions. Do not run the Community installer against a Pro vault.

Requirements

Community: native Windows PowerShell 5.1 or 7; alternatively Bash with Python 3.10 or newer. The selected Codex, Claude or Gemini adapter can be generated without the agent executable installed.

Pro 1.1.0 guided release: Windows and PowerShell 7.2 or newer. The recorded qualification used Windows 11 and PowerShell 7.6.5. Linux and macOS are not qualified for this guided release.

Your selected agent has its own installation, account, permissions and network requirements. No KOS package grants a subscription to an AI provider.

Verify the choice

Confirm the package version, target directory and existing edition before apply. An unknown or blocked vault is a reason to inspect the report, not to remove its identity files.

If you are unsure

Start a new learning vault and keep the original unchanged. After the first useful task, test any migration on a separate copy.

Versions, sources & verification

Reviewed against: Starter Kit 1.2.0 / Community 1.0.0; KOS Pro 1.1.0 / Core 1.0.0.

Agent runtime behavior has not been tested for this article. Run the verification steps with your selected agent.

Source review confirms the documented interface. It does not replace testing your vault, tools, or recovery copy.
